The name ‘tractor’ is a derivative of the Latin word tractus, meaning ‘drawn’, since it’s primary function is to draw (pull) loads from behind. The draught horse was used to pull heavy loads before the Steam power tractor came to the scene. The first set of steam power tractors were manufactured around 1850.

The first known internal combustion engine was manufactured by Etienne Lenoir in 1860. The first modern internal combustion engine which ran on petroleum gas was created by a German engineer, Nicolaus Otto in 1876. Internal combustion engines can run on natural gas, petroleum products and Hydrogen (which is rarely used).

Before the threshing machine was produced, threshing was done by hand with flails. The first known threshing machine was developed in 1786 by a Scottish engineer, Andrew Meikle. The threshing machine is used majorly in grain production.
